Refugee and Immigrant Health

Many communities are welcoming immigrant and refugee families who enroll children in school. How do we identify, prioritize, and address the unique health needs of this population? Join us for a discussion to answer these questions and learn about practical and valuable resources that will help School Nurses ensure optimal health for learning.

Learning Objectives:

  • The learner will identify three areas of priority in the health care of refugee and immigrant students and families
  • The learner will define at least two resources or tools to utilize when navigating health care for refugee and immigrant students and families

The speakers are Jennifer Norton MSN, RN, NCSN and Amber Abreu M. Ed.

Jennifer has been a nurse for 28 years after starting her career as an EMT. Her nursing career has included emergency room and trauma care as well as over 15 years as a school nurse in rural, suburban, and urban settings. She has been very active in nursing education as a teaching assistant, research assistant, instructor, and clinical preceptor for several colleges and universities. Jennifer has been a longtime member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Nurses and Practitioners (PA SNAP) and NASN, as well as a Focus of the Framework national presenter. When Jennifer is not supporting School Nurses, you will most likely find her in her garden.

Amber currently serves as the Director of Student Services and English Language Development in the Lebanon School District. She has 17 years of experience in urban education with a focus in ELD and educational leadership. She began her career in the School District of Lancaster as an ELD teacher and then, a Coordinator of ELD and World Language for the high school and finally, districtwide. She holds a PA teaching certificate in Secondary English, K-12 ESL and K-12 Principal, a Masters in Education and is a doctoral candidate in an Educational Leadership program.

Nursing contact hours (0.5 contact hours for each workshop) are provided by Northeastern University School of Nursing, accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
